World Record Breaking Christmas Card
Author: admin | Filed under: blogger Sunday Jan 18,2009

The most expensive Christmas card ever to be sold was inscribed with the greeting “Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you” and was one of the first to ever be made.

Produced in 1843 the card, and designed by English painter JC Horsley the card was commissioned by businessman Sir Henry Cole. Sir Henry Cole was a prominent businessman of the time and is famous for having modernized the British postal system with the controversial penny post in 1840.

Only 12 cards of an original batch of 1000 remain in existence and in September 2001 an anonymous seller offered one of the cards, which was actually signed by Sir Henry Cole himself for auction with Devizes auctioneers Henry Aldridge.

Auctioneer Alan Aldridge said: “We had received six sealed bids for the Christmas card before the auction started and when the bidding did get under way there were seven people in the room bidding and another four bidding by telephone.”

Originally it was believed that the card would sell for a figure between £4,000 and £6,000 however the price rose steadily as two bidders battled to win the lot and the final selling price was a record breaking £22,250 making it the most expensive Christmas card ever sold.

The buyer was a telephone bidder and remains anonymous however it is believed that the current owner is from London.

More information on the worlds most expensive Christmas card can be found in the Swindon Advertiser archives.

Incredible Roy Doty Christmas card

Dotyxmas I must have been six or seven years old when I first came across Roy Doty's illustrations in a pile of old Popular Science magazines from the 1960s. Doty's "Wordless Workshop" comics featured a pipe-smoking dad who solved common household problems with ingenious but easy-to-make devices.

I instantly became a fan of his elegant, light-hearted, clear-as-a-bell drawings, and whenever I found old copy of PopSci at a garage sale or used book store, I'd tear through it until I found his two-page cartoon, which he started doing in the early 1950s.

A couple of years ago, I learned that Roy was still actively drawing, for magazines and books. I immediately emailed him and asked him to become the illustrator for MAKE magazine's puzzle page, called Aha! (in homage to another hero of mine, Martin Gardner, who wrote two books I treasure: Aha! Insight and Aha! Gotcha, now available in one volume). Roy was happy to oblige, and has illustrated the column ever since. I can't tell you how exciting it is to get the faxes with his rough sketches for the column. Of course, he needs no art direction; he knows exactly how to illustrate the puzzles.

Every year, Roy sends out whimsical Christmas cards, and this year's is a masterpiece -- a Mousetrap / Rube Goldberg-style holiday celebration machine.

Antique Christmas Cards

Other poets have contributed to the rich collection of popular Christmas poems. Poets like Thomas hardy, Henry, Vaughan, Richard Wilber and Henry Wordsworth Longfellow have penned Christmas poems in their times.

Some Christmas poems are dedicated to the special occasion of Christmas, while others are religious and dedicated to the Jesus Christ and His teachings. Still others are children poems meant for kids to playfully sing with friends during the Christmas season. All these poems have a common thread – they are all in the spirit of the Christmas season and touch a cord in the heart of anyone who sings it or listens to it. These also form the emotional connections to fond memories of childhood, when children of today become adults of tomorrow.

Poems have a life of their own. Admittedly, seasoned poets know how to rhyme and make it flow and thus make it an easy read. However, poems can be and have been written by many ordinary people. Whether written by famous poets and read by millions or written by a Mom for her loving children or even penned by a lonely soul talking to God out there, poems sizzle with the raw emotions contained in their words.

Combine poetry and art

Christmas poems are no different. Hidden in the lines that are all too familiar to those who read it every year are emotions, stories of bygone eras and teaching from ancient times. These provide us with a unique vision of the life at the time the poem was written. Christmas poems have been written over many years, each presenting a unique view of the same occasion, filtered by the norms of those times.

Christmas poems have been written in many forms and for many kinds of people who have played a significant role in our society and in our lives. Poems for teachers, for fathers, for mothers, funny poems, melancholy ones and many others have been written by professional and amateur writers alike.

Write a poem this season, for someone you love or care for. Or just write one to celebrate the Christmas season. Draw inspiration by reading other poems let your creativity flow. Let your words remain a fond memory for others, for years after you have passed.

A Letter to Rudolph

Christmas

I've been getting ready for Christmas
I'm revving up for the great day
my credit card's cracked and my freezer is packed
'cause I started my shopping in May

The mistletoe's hanging in bunches
'cause the odd Christmas kiss isn't wrong
and the Vicar I've found - quite likes calling round
and exploring my crowns with his tongue

The bin men have gotten quite friendly
they're after a present I fear
they won't feel so chuffed when I tell them - get stuffed
'cause they don't speak the rest of the year

The family is coming for dinner
last year it was quite a good laugh
we ate fairly late - dished the veg on the plate
found the turkey was still in the bath

the Kids are all pink with excitement
'cause Santa will come so they say
their lists are extensive - extremely expensive
and they'll break it all by Boxing day

But it's worth all that fuss Christmas morning
when their little eyes are all aglow
when we're all feeling merry full of goodwill and sherry
and suffering from wind Ho Ho Ho

But please don't forget why we do it
why each year we must go to this fuss
for that guy up above who brought peace and brought love
and who probably owns Toys R Us..........

NOT YOUR FATHER CHRISTMAS POEMS (#2)

At Christmas Time

At Xmas time when we were kids,
we were bloody poor,
and Santa weren't too generous
when he knocked upon our door

But we made do by saving up,
yes every little bit
"We may be poor" said dear old Dad,
"but I dont give a shit!"

Our Xmas tree stood tall & proud
and rigid as a totem,
With Xmas baubles hangin' there.....
like testies in ya scrotum!

Everyone loved Xmas dinner,
no if's, and's or but's,
and all us kids would piss ourselves
when Grandpa dropped his guts.

We'd leave a six pack for Santa
and he always drank it quick,
then I found out it was just me Dad,
the alcoholic prick!

But all in all we had fun,
and lot & lots of cheer,
Now I can't wait till I've got kids....
cause I'll get a carton of beer!

NOT YOUR FATHER CHRISTMAS POEMS (#3)

A Letter to Rudolph

Dear Husband, It is time that I must have my say,
I've taken your shit day after day.
I've kept the home peaceful year after year
Now there is going to be changes, so listen my dear.

So you're famous, everyone knows your name,
And you're a specialist by gum, in the transport game,
You think you're so grand with your important job.
But I'm telling you my dear you're a worn out old yob

363 days a year,
You sit on your arse drinking scotch, rum and beer,
You claim it is to keep up the shine on your nose
So Santa can see where he bloodywell goes.

One night a year is all that you work,
You and your eight reisty mates - they're all jerks.
Dasher and Dancer - Speed freaks I say,
The sleigh wouldn't go that quick any other way.
Prancer and Vixen - Just cheap little tarts,
But they look like angels once Comet starts.

Cupids on some freaked out damned power trip,
And Donner...well, she should just get a damned grip
And Blitzen, I almost don't need to say,
Is here getting blitzed with you every day.

All of these years at the front of the sled,
Has gone, I'm afraid, to your crusty old head.
You're a layabout and a drunkard, with a big shiny nose,
And a weakness for elves in black pantyhose.

I'm telling you husband that one Christmas song,
Has made you think that you can do no wrong.
So this year while your out with old Santa's sled,
I am eloping, my dear, with your friend - Mr. Ed

COOL FM

Companies can settle at a-locations or at A-locations. The home of the Polish radio station RFM-FM is definitely an A-location. See for yourself, have you ever seen a company in a building that looks like it used to be a shooting location of Star Wars?
